What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that websites store on your device. Besides cookies, VOCAP keeps some data in your browser's storage (localStorage, sessionStorage and IndexedDB). It works in a similar way: the data stays on your device and only vocap.io can read it, but unlike cookies it is not sent with every request to the server.

What we use them for

  • Keeping you signed in: done by Clerk, our sign-in provider.
  • Measuring how the site is used: with Google Analytics 4, which we load through Google Tag Manager.
  • Knowing where the people who sign up come from: we keep in your browser the first page you landed on and where the visit came from; if you sign up, this is saved to your account.
  • Not losing your audio: if you pick an audio file and first need to create your account or pay, we keep it in your browser so we can carry on with it when you come back.

Cookies we use

Sign-in (Clerk) - essential

Cookie Where Purpose Duration
__session, __client_uat vocap.io Keep you signed in and check that your session is still valid Set by Clerk based on your session
__client clerk.vocap.io Identify your session with the sign-in service Set by Clerk based on your session

Analytics (Google Analytics 4)

Google Tag Manager loads Google Analytics 4 on VOCAP's pages. It tells us which pages are visited, where traffic comes from, and which device and browser are used, plus the funnel steps we send: sign-up (sign_up), checkout start (begin_checkout) and purchase (purchase, with the pack and the amount).

Cookie Provider Purpose Duration
_ga Google Analytics Tell visitors apart 2 years
_ga_<ID> Google Analytics Keep the session state 2 years

Browser storage (VOCAP) - functional

Name Where Purpose Duration
vocap_ft localStorage Sign-up attribution: the first page you landed on, where the visit came from (the referring site's domain only), the utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign parameters, the date and time of that first visit and the page language. If you sign up, this is saved to your account. Until you clear the site data
vocap_signup_tracked_* localStorage Count your sign-up only once in analytics Until you clear the site data
vocap_purchase_tracked_* localStorage Count each purchase only once in analytics Until you clear the site data
vocap_resume_upload, vocap_resume_lang localStorage Remember, while you pay, that we should carry on with your audio when you come back (and in which language) Deleted when used or when you log out; not used after 2 hours
vocap_audio IndexedDB The audio you picked while you create your account or pay. It stays in your browser and is not uploaded to VOCAP until you transcribe it. Deleted when used or when you log out; after 2 hours it is no longer used and is deleted the next time you open the home page or the app
vocap_pending_audio, vocap_pending_tier sessionStorage Remember in that tab that there is a pending audio, or which pack you chose before signing up Until you close the tab (ignored after 30 minutes)

Payments (Stripe)

You pay on Stripe's page (checkout.stripe.com), outside vocap.io. There, Stripe uses its own cookies to process the payment and prevent fraud. We don't load Stripe scripts on vocap.io pages. See Stripe's Privacy Policy for more information.

Managing cookies

You can control and/or delete cookies as you wish. You can delete all cookies already on your device and configure most browsers to prevent them from being stored. Clearing the site data also deletes the vocap_* browser storage listed above. Logging out of VOCAP deletes the saved audio and the flag used to resume it. To stop sending data to Google Analytics you can also use its opt-out browser add-on.

However, if you disable cookies, some features and services may not work correctly (for example, you won't be able to stay signed in).

In major browsers:

  • Chrome: Settings > Privacy and security > Cookies
  • Firefox: Options > Privacy & Security > Cookies
  • Safari: Preferences > Privacy > Cookies
  • Edge: Settings > Cookies and site permissions

Third-party services

These services set their own cookies:

  • Clerk: for signing in
  • Google Analytics: for usage analysis
  • Stripe: on its own checkout page

We don't use third-party advertising, social media or remarketing cookies.

Changes to this policy

We may update this cookie policy periodically. We recommend reviewing this page regularly.
