Permissions and data protection
You are responsible for getting permission to record lectures (some universities regulate it) and for obtaining informed consent from the people you interview for your thesis, per your faculty's ethics code. In VOCAP, the audio is only used to transcribe it and is deleted from our servers when done; to transcribe and analyse it, it goes through OpenAI and the text through Anthropic (US), and your account keeps the transcript and its analysis. Keep this in mind in the protocol you submit and respect the confidentiality agreed with your interviewees.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost for a thesis?
Depends on the number of interviews. For a typical qualitative thesis (8-12 interviews of 45-60 min, about 10h total), the 12h pack costs €14.99. Much cheaper than any human service (€80-200/h).
Is it legal to record lectures?
For personal use it is usually allowed, but some universities restrict it and many professors want to be asked. Ask before recording. If the class is online and the professor records it, you can transcribe that recording.
Does it work for qualitative interviews (NVivo, MAXQDA, Atlas.ti)?
Yes. Download the text as .txt or Word and import it into your qualitative analysis software. Since the transcript has no timestamps and does not separate speakers, mark the turns yourself on review.
Is there a student discount?
There is no specific discount. Pay-as-you-go is already cheap for small volumes: the 30h pack works out at €1 per hour and hours never expire, so they last the whole year.
Does it work with live classes?
We do not transcribe live. You upload the recording as soon as class ends and a few minutes later you have the text.
Does it work with poor quality audio?
It works, but with more errors. A phone at the back of a large room with echo gives worse results than a phone 2 meters from the professor. For important classes record as close as possible.
