When to use SRT, VTT or TXT

SRT is the classic subtitle format: it works with YouTube, VLC, Premiere and almost every editing tool. VTT is the web variant used by HTML5 players and platforms like Vimeo. TXT is plain text, useful when you only need the transcript without timestamps (to summarise, translate or paste into a document). This tool converts between the three without sending your file to any server: everything is processed in your browser with JavaScript.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SRT and VTT?

SRT (SubRip) is the traditional format with timestamps like 00:00:00,000. VTT (WebVTT) is the modern HTML5 version: same timestamp format but with a WEBVTT header and support for CSS styles and positioning. For YouTube either works; for native web players, VTT is better.

Does my file get uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion happens 100% in your browser with JavaScript. We do not upload anything, we do not store anything, no signup needed.

Is there a size limit?

We do not enforce a limit, but because everything runs in your browser, very large files (several MB) may take a couple of seconds. Typical SRTs for long audio are just a few KB.

Does it keep timestamps when converting to TXT?

By default no: TXT is plain text. If you want to keep timestamps as a reference, tick the "Include timestamps" option before converting.

What if my SRT has errors?

The converter tries to be tolerant: it skips extra blank lines and normalises separators. If the format is too broken, it will fail with a clear message.

What if I need to generate the SRT from an audio?

That is automatic transcription. VOCAP transcribes audio/video to text and exports directly to SRT and VTT. You get 30 minutes free on signup to try it.
